Herschel McFarland

Herschel McFarland (1928-2021) was an atomic veteran, singer/sonwriter and race car driver. He was among 42,000 US Navy, Army, scientists, reporters and other civilians in 1946 from around the world at Bikini atoll in the Marshall Islands to prepare for and witness the first peace-time nuclear bomb tests. As a lifelong musician, he wrote songs, played guitar and sang on stage since the late 1940s. He was inducted into the Gatesville Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009, Gatesville, Texas. He also raced jalopies on race tracks around Texas from 1950 to 1967. Herschel spent his whole life in the Austin, Texas area.

John Driver

John as been a lifelong working musician, writing, playing and singing songs since the late 1960s. His styles cover Rock and Roll,  Blues and Country/Western music. He was lead and slide guitarist with Herschel McFarland for many years. He has spent time forming and playing in bands from Maui, Hawaii to the San Francisco Bay Area, California, Austin, Texas, Puerto  Vallarta, Mexico and Northern Italy. He currently lives in Austin, Texas.

 

Paul Griego

Paul Griego has been a tireless voice for atomic veterans and civilians from Enewetak and Bikini atolls, and for the Marshallese communities in the Marshall Islands and in the United States. As the New Mexico Commander of the National Association of Atomic Veterans (NAAV), he organized events and lobbied for changes in US policy for the benefit of all affected by nuclear radiation. In 2029, Paul is planning an event in the Marshall Islands commemorating 50 years since the building of the Runit dome as part of the attempted cleanup of Enewetak atoll in 1977-1980. His participation in that humanitarian effort is a central subject in "Too Late to Learn." Paul lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

F. Lincoln Grahlfs, PhD

F. Lincoln Grahlfs, PhD, (1922 - 2024) was raised in metropolitan New York City, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and participated in the first post-war test of nuclear weapons. Floating on a U.S. Navy tugboat, Lincoln Grahlfs and his crew were tasked with putting out fires on empty ships used as targets and towing those that hadn’t sunk to shallower waters for examination. 

He studied sociology and also earned a certificate in East Asian Studies. From 1956 to 1988 he taught undergraduate courses in sociology, retiring in 1988 from the University of Wisconsin Centers where he was chairman of the department of anthropology and sociology.

He published the books: Voices From Ground Zero: Recollections and Feelings of Nuclear Test Veterans (1996) and Undaunted: The Story of a United States Navy Tug and Her Crew in World WarII (2002). He fought for better health care for veterans suffering from nuclear exposure. In 2022, US President Joe Biden called him to Washington DC, to witness the signing of a bill mandating that care and was honored with a personal meeting with President Biden at the White House. 

Sophie Griego

Sophie Griego is Paul Griego's daughter, born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is studying Nuclear Engineering at UNM. In "Too Late to Learn," Sophie tells of her time learning from her father about the results of atomic testing, his time in the Marshall Islands and her hopes for the treatment and storage of future nuclear waste.

Pastor Paul Lokebol Swington

Pastor Paul serves the Marshallese community as a pastor in Northwest Arkansas and in Springfield, Missouri. As a youth leader, Paul believes in connecting youth with sports. ''Don't miss the wave, God wants you to surf because you've made perfection your idol.'' In "Too Late to Learn," he tells a story of an eyewitness to the largest US bomb explosion, Operation Castle Bravo in 1954, that unexpectedly spread nuclear fallout over several populated atolls. 

Thomas Kanady

Director/Producer

Thomas Kanady, director and producer at Circle KK Media, began his filmmaking journey in high school in 1973. He honed his craft through night classes at DeAnza College in Cupertino, CA, during the 1980s. Despite a demanding career in Silicon Valley and the Seattle area, Thomas's passion for storytelling never waned. In 2018, he embarked on a documentary  that reflects his dedication to capturing powerful, untold stories. Tom currently lives in the Seattle, Washington area.

Jean Kiser

Jean Kiser is an accomplished Project Manager and former award-winning TV News Producer with over 20 years of experience leading high-performing teams, optimizing operations, and delivering strategic results. Expert in relationship management, cross-functional collaboration, and executing complex projects under high-pressure, fast-changing conditions. Driven by a passion for visual storytelling and impactful human connection. Jean lives in the Seattle, Washington area.

Graham Metcalfe

Score Composer/Designer

Graham Metcalfe is a classically trained composer, guitarist and electronic musician based in Northern California. He began writing classical guitar music in high school and has since written music for orchestra, winds and a variety of acoustic and hybrid ensembles large and small. After earning a degree in Music Composition from the University of California in the early 1980s, Graham worked as a Senior Art Director at Apple Computer and spent several decades as a Creative Director at a number of other companies leading creative teams. Recently he has returned his focus to music, earning a graduate degree in composition from University of Chichester; creating interactive music for video games and soundtracks for traditional media, with a focus on personal storytelling and emotional impact. Graham lives in Santa Rosa, California.

Gordon Currie

Sound Editor/Story Adviser

Gordon Currie has a keen sense of sound and how it fits into storytelling. Having grown up in a musical household, he developed his skills on piano and guitar. He soaked up every guitar style to which he was exposed: rock, jazz, classical, folk, world music. Gordon’s deep knowledge of this wide variety of styles is conspicuous in his brilliant, multifaceted playing in  Notable Journey (notablejourney.com).

He built his own recording and mastering studio, expanding it to cover the needs of cinema. With strong sensibilities of film, he applied his sound editing and mixing skills to "Too Late to Learn." Gordon lives in the Seattle, Washington area.
