Welcome to the official press page for our film, TOO LATE TO LEARN. The documentary is a 68 minute feature film and the world premiere is in Rio de Janeiro on May 29, 2026.

Logline

Through the testimonies of U.S. atomic veterans, a U.S. civilian, and a displaced Marshall Islander, Too Late to Learn uncovers the enduring human cost of nuclear tests at Bikini and Enewetak atolls—and the impossible promise of “cleaning up” a poisoned paradise.

Short Synopsis

"Too Late to Learn" is a documentary that exposes the lasting human toll of U.S. nuclear testing at Bikini and Enewetak Atolls. Through firsthand accounts from atomic veterans, a civilian cleanup participant, and a displaced Marshall Islander, the film traces the immediate fallout, the long-term health impacts on families, and the painful displacement of island communities whose homelands remain contaminated. As the story confronts the false promise of “cleanup” and the minimization of radiation risks, it asks what accountability—and future—remain after a paradise is poisoned.

Long Synopsis

Laughter faded on the Marshall Islands’ paradise after the first bomb detonated at Bikini Atoll, the first peace time test of an atomic weapon 80 years ago. Then came the attempted humanitarian cleanup, 21 years after the last bomb test. It was futile, as this documentary illustrates.

In “Too Late to Learn“ we learn about the effects of nuclear fallout from US military and civilian participants who give us stories of their lived experiences in the Marshall Islands, where testing the of nuclear weapons were performed. Navy veteran Herschel McFarland tells stories of his time in the 1946 Operation Crossroads plutonium bomb tests at Bikini atoll in the Marshall Islands and the aftermath of his radiation exposure, especially the impact on his children.

Paul Griego’s part in the brave yet fruitless mission to perform the cleanup effort at Enewetak Atoll reflects the challenges faced by those trying to rectify the past. He also tells of the US military attempts to keep radiation measurements low and the lack of any protections from radiation exposure for those working in the fallout laden islands.

Navy veteran F. Lincoln Grahlfs, Ph.D speaks to atomic veterans about his time at Bikini atoll in 1946, his personal trauma, and his children’s illnesses. He also reveals what he discovered about radiation exposure after reaching out to affected US veterans. Pastor Swington sheds light on a painful legacy of Marshall Islanders, sharing the heart-wrenching story of his ancestors from Bikini and Rongelap atolls who were displaced, their homes forever quarantined. The pastor gives a compelling voiceover of a first-of its-kind animation of the fallout pattern from the 15 megaton Castle Bravo bomb at Bikini atoll. Sophie Griego, Paul Griego’s daughter, tells of her concerns for her father, herself, and our collective future.

Together, these voices create a powerful mosaic, inviting viewers to reflect on the broader implications of these historical nuclear events.

Director's Statement

"Too Late To Learn" offers an exploration of the impacts of fallout from peace time nuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands. Through lived experiences come poignant stories told by those who witnessed the Bikini Atoll tests firsthand. We uncover the lasting impacts on their lives and families. We also confront the tragic futility of efforts to clean up radioactive fallout on Enewetak Atoll, with every island bearing the contamination. The neglect faced by those tasked with these cleanup operations highlights the senselessness of these initiatives.
